Michael House

A Steiner Waldorf School in Shipley.

Michael House is a private school which opened in 1934, and is located within woodlands adjoining the beautiful 700 acre Shipley Country Park. The school’s curriculum is based on the Steiner Philosophy which differs significantly from the standard national curriculum found within public schools. It caters for students from age 3½ to 16 years with approximately 150 students in total. Michael House aims ‘to engage and nourish each child’s innate curiosity and love of learning by offering a balance of academic, artistic and practical activities.’

The school is divided into to three distinct learning stages. The early years education focuses on providing practical, hands-on activities and environments that encourage creative play. Through years 1-8, the emphasis is on developing pupils’ artistic expression and social capacities, fostering both creative and analytical modes of understanding. Years 9 & 10 focus on developing critical understanding and fostering idealism. Throughout, the approach stresses the role of the imagination in learning and places a strong value on integrating academic, practical and artistic pursuits.

For many the idea of an alternative learning method can be somewhat daunting when making that all important schooling decision; however it is worth bearing in mind that in 2012, Michael House was the only school in Derbyshire where 100% of pupils achieved five or more GCSEs at A* to C grades. 91% of Michael House students achieved five or more GCSEs at A* to C grades (including English & Maths) with only two schools achieving a higher percentage of students with this achievement, of which one was the renowned Repton School.

Remember ‘knowledge is power’ and there is a substantial amount of information at your fingertips on the web in relation to Rudolf Steiner’s educational philosophy. Way too much to even attempt to summarise within one article. When you consider that this type of school is rare, with only 1,200 (circa) worldwide, parents of Derby and the surrounding areas should feel privileged to have this option available on their doorstep. Michael House runs numerous open days throughout the year to allow parents and children to visit the school and learn more about how it operates, so check out their website to see when the next one is running.

It also houses the Rowans Day Nursery for children from 3 months to 6 years. This is an Ofsted registered day nursery which is influenced by the Steiner education philosophy for learning within the early years key stages. The nursery’s last Ofsted report (May 2011) was awarded an overall ‘Good’ rating with 9 of 17 judgments given the ‘Outstanding’ rating.

The school also offers ‘Parent & Child’ sessions Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday for children up to 3½yrs accompanied by their parent/s or carer/s. The session allows children to interact with each other through various activities whilst offering a supportive network for parents and carers.
