A firm foundation for your child’s education.

Derby High School is proud to offer Primary education for both boys and girls from age 3 to 11 years old.  The team at Derby High believe that the first steps a child takes into education are incredibly important and the Primary School aims to give every child the best start on the road to lifelong learning.

Derby High Primary has a pre-school unit which offers both full and part-time places to children in the term following their third birthday. From Reception onwards all children attend on a full-time basis. Learning is designed to be fun and children learn through topics so that all curriculum areas are covered. Combined with the various trips the children go on throughout the year, the school welcomes outside visitors and workshops to help bring learning to life. At Derby High there is so much more to learning than just the curriculum with tennis lessons for all children from Year 1 and swimming lessons from Year 2 as well as specialist PE teaching, French and Music. Every child is given the opportunity to explore their talents.

Children are nurtured in a caring and secure environment which has high standards and traditional values instilling a love of learning to stand them in good stead for their future. There is a close relationship between home and school and there are many formal and informal occasions for parents to be involved and exchange views on development. Senior pupils also visit the Primary School regularly to read to children and work with staff, providing the opportunity for children to mix with older peers.

The Senior School and Sixth Form are available for girls only at Derby High School from age 11 to 18 years old. Derby High strives for high academic achievement but also to build strong, confident young women of the future, ready to take their own steps in the outside world. They believe strongly in the merits of a single-sex education at this age and feel their pupils have the confidence to involve themselves fully in challenges and education. The curriculum is designed to offer breadth and balance, establishing a strong base that allows progression to a wide range of A Levels and university studies.

The best way to experience the atmosphere of Derby High School is to go for a visit and see for yourself. Derby High staff and pupils are proud of their school community and love showing parents and future pupils around their school. For the Primary School, please contact Mrs Karen Tudor in Primary Admissions who will arrange for you to have a tour with the Primary Head, Mrs Hannaford. They encourage you to bring your child along too.
